Newspapers are still sold from newsstands by street vendors in cities, but the newspaper business in Britain is dominated by W.H.Smith, who control distribution and have their own retail shops. There are a few other national chains including John Menzies, Martin and Forbuoys. Magazines and comics are their other staple sources of income and sales of National Lottery tickets (from which they take 5 percent commission). The growth of specialist comics shops such as The Forbidden Planet means that fewer comics are bought at traditional mainstream newsstands and newsagents. Recently supermarkets have started selling newspapers and magazines, and this would seem to accelerate the trend away from newsstands and specialist newsagents.
